Oldham manager Paul Dickov was full of praise for his side after putting in a performance that saw the new boss started his managerial career on a winning note.

It was always going to be a difficult task to come away with something from Prenton Park but 20 year old Dale Stephens put Latics on their way to three points when he fired a free kick into the bottom corner of the net from 18 yards after 27 minutes.

Both teams battled after that but it was Stephens again who found the net nine minutes from time to ensure Latics had done enough for the full points haul.

Dickov said after the game: ‘The players worked hard and there was a lot of passion out there.

‘We got the result we deserved and I am sure we will get better as time goes on.

‘It was a good three points for us but we’ve got to keep our feet firmly on the ground. It is one game out of 46 and we must not get carried away.’
