Paul Dickov saw his team win his first game in charge against Tranmere at Prenton Park, thanks to two goals from Dale Stephens.
Stephens grabbed the first of his brace midway through the first half with a direct free-kick from 18 yards.
The midfielder made it two for Latics late on, latching on to Warren Feeney’s pass before beating keeper Gunnar Nielsen.
Ian Thomas-Moore netted a late consolation for the hosts.
