Carl Winchester’s form for Oldham this season has earned the midfielder a call-up into the Northern Ireland squad.

Lee Johnson has been left delighted, not only for the 21-year-old but also for the club as it’s recognition and reward for both parties. On a personal note though he also knows that if he’s not going to be involved for his country this weekend he can still feature for us on Saturday.

Johnson told the official website: ‘I’m delighted for two reasons as he can still play on the Saturday for us because if he is not involved with Northern Ireland he can come back and play.

‘I’m delighted for him and the club because to have a player come through the youth system is excellent. Supporters can see the path he has come from to become a full international and it is fantastic for Carl and the club.’

Previously Winchester has won caps for the Northern Ireland U21 side, and has been capped once at senior level, perhaps this Friday will give him a chance to add to this?

Northern Ireland, who have had a fantastic start to the Euro 2016 qualification campaign, face Romania on Friday.

Well done Carl, a call-up that is richly deserved!
