The width of a crossbar left Oldham Athletic with a narrow deficit to overcome after they went down 2-1 in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Final at the B2net Stadium last night.

Danny Whitaker fired home a spot kick which Chesterfield were awarded, but not before a penalty by Shefki Kuqi was hammered against the woodwork.

But there was also a fantastic opening goal from the Spireite`s Scott Boden which was only overshadowed by a spectacular finish from Robbie Simpson.

Boden looked like he has missed his share of the chances, he headed a glorious cross from Drew Talbot wide of the target and then he completely fluffed a chance after being set up by Jack Lester.

But he made up for his misdemeanours early in the second half when he sidefooted home a cross from James Hunt.

Oldham had a good chance to level matters when Kuqi was pulled down in the box, he took the kick himself and hit the crossbar.

But Latics were back in the game just four minutes later when Simpson smashed home a swerving shot from 30 yards.

Then on 66 minutes, the home side were in front again when James Tarkowski tripped Lester and Whitaker beat Cisak with the spot kick.
