Johnson – The JPT Is A Priority

Manager Lee Johnson has said that this season the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy is a serious priority for him as he looks for success at Oldham.

Having picked up our first win of the season last weekend, the gaffer was speaking to the Official Site ahead of our game tomorrow against Bradford and although he’s expecting a tough test, he wants us to build on last weekend and notch up back to back victories because he wants us to really try and work our way to a trip to Wembley this season.

‘This is a big tournament for us and we want to do well in it so we will pick our best team to win the game. You want to try and keep the same team for as long as possible, certainly as a general rule, it’s good to keep a winning team.’

As for our opponents in the first round Johnson adds that they will be tough opponents and he describes them as ‘flying’ themselves at the minute and it’s typical that we ‘seem to catch teams like that’ but he knows either way it’ll be challenge and it’s one we have to overcome if we are to reach our aims.

‘I’m sure that both teams will have three or four players that they mix up a bit. We are at that point in the season where there are a few niggles so teams might rest a few but ideally we want to keep th same team. At the moment we have a few little knocks and we’ll have to wait until the boys come in to assess them.’

As for the impending transfer deadline, Johnson wasn’t given much away in his press conference saying simply you never really know what to expect because you can never predict what can turn on a single phonecall, but for him that’s the beauty of deadline day as despite any planning, in many ways managers are sat there like the fans waiting and wondering.

‘I’ve brought my snack to stay here until 11 if needs be. There is always something that happens late and fast as we know with Stead last season. We are in the market and there are a number of players around at the moment, but we are not sure if we will be able to get anybody in.’
