There wasn’t to be any league cup upset for Oldham on Tuesday as they were unceremoniously dumped out at the first round stage.

Oldham might have seen Middlesbrough’s visit to Boundary Park as a good chance to cause an upset against our championship oppo, but Boro cruised to a 3-0 win.

A little over five-minutes in and the tone was set with Jonathan Woodgate heading an Adam Reach corner over with Grant Leadbitter also going close before Boro made their dominance count…

Luke Williams (30) smashed home from 30-yards to give Boro a one-nil lead, which was taken into the half time break.

That lead was doubled just minutes into the second half as Leadbitter (48) got onto the end of a Reach cross to finish past Latics ‘keeper Paul Rachubka and all but end any lingering hopes of an upset.

Boro turned to new Spanish Kike (60) and he added a third just minutes after coming on as he drove home, he also lobbed in a fourth but three was enough to put the championship through and leave Lee Johnson disappointed that we didn’t get a single effort on target!
