Johnson – We Weren’t Strong Enough

Manager Lee Johnson has admitted that Oldham weren’t physically as strong as Rotherham last night and unfortunately it was enough to consign us to back to back league defeats.

A two nil loss Johnson believes can be attributed somewhat to the players we had missing on the night, but he knows he can’t use that as an excuse because players simply have to step up when called upon.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, Johnson explained.

‘We were a bit depleted with our squad and I think that showed. I thought we were physically weaker than them but I thought the endeavour was there. We had some chances which we should’ve put away but it wasn’t to be. We’ve got to stick together now.’

Johnson goes on to say that he knew both games would be tough, and although obviously he didn’t want us to lose them, we did, so we have to move on and make those points up elsewhere starting with the game against Crewe this weekend.

With players missing, Johnson admits he will be looking at the loan market to give us a boost this week and he’d be hopeful of adding somebody, if not a few, ahead of the weekend’s fixtures, but the gaffer is also honest and admits he has made some errors in player recruitment in the past but that is something he has to learn from as he continues his young managerial career.

‘We’ve got ten important games. I’m very disappointed but I can’t say I’m shocked because we’re physically weak and I knew that. You can get away with two or three players not being strong enough but not seven or eight, but we’ll address that. I won’t shy away, I’ve been disappointed with a couple of people I’ve given a contract to, but that’s my fault and I’ll address that.’

Difficult to be too critical, he is learning himself and these mistakes will happen, but equally not every signing however good or risky it looks on paper will work out, some players just don’t fit or whatever.

As long as we learn, and improve it’s the way to go, but maybe the time for reflection will be over the summer, for now focus on strengthening us and getting us right to get the points we need to increase our breathing space at the bottom end of the table.

I have no doubts that’s what will be on the mind of the gaffer as well.
