Gary Harkins’ potential return to Oldham has moved a step closer with him now officially becoming a free agent.

Lee Johnson brought the midfielder to Boundary Park last season for a loan spell with the club after an unhappy time with St Mirren early in the first-year of his contract with the Scottish outfit.

As this had another year to run when the 2013/2014 season ended the 29-year-old of course returned to his parent club, but this was always thought to be on a temporary basis only and so this has proven with an agreement reached to mutually terminate his contract halfway through its scheduled two-year agreement.

The former Kilmarnock man is expected to be one of those that Johnson will now approach to join us on a permanent basis, where he could line-up alongside another former Killie man Liam Kelly after he arrived this week.
