Manager Lee Johnson has said that the victory over Colchester United was absolutely vital for Oldham this season.

Six games unbeaten now with three wins, has lifted us nicely onto 50 points in the league and with so few games remaining, you have to think that Oldham are now definitely safe from the battle below us, but of course we have to continue with this and look to finish the season with as many points as we can.

Speaking to the Official Site after Connor Brown’s deflected effort was enough to separate both teams on the day, the gaffer explained.

‘I think 50 points will probably be enough but I will sit down and work out all the permutations. We are looking up now and we have to set the tone for next year. It’s important that the lads stay focused and move on to Monday in front of our fans with our new stand going up and show the performance that everybody wants to see.’

Speaking more specifically about the game and not relegation fears, Johnson goes on to say that he felt the victory was more comfortable that the stats and the goal line suggested at full time, but he admitted it was a tough encounter for us at points.

‘It was a very hard fought victory. It was a vital day for us and a vital win. I thought we defended like trojans. I was a tense game but it was important for everybody that we got numbers and energy behind the ball. We limited them to very few good efforts.’

Johnson goes on to say that if people watch the match back despite the corners and the long range efforts they had from outside the box, there wasn’t many clear cut chances they had to worry us, and he knows we have to be that tight again now as we continue moving forward into the remaining matches this season.

Non more so that Monday where we can really build on this again now and look to kick on higher up the table.
