Latics playoff hopes now hang by a thread as they were comprehensively beaten by an impressive looking Barnsley outfit. Barnsley spurned a golden chance just before the break from close range when 1 on 1 with Lee Grant, but made amends just after half time when Chris Shuker blasted the ball home from close range. On 62 minutes Stephen Mcphail made it 2-0 with a close range tap in and Martin Devaney made it three with a right footed shot from just inside the area.

Now I am one for trying to be as positive as possible but I think Ronnie has to hold his hands up today. Chris Swailes was clearly not fit and should not have played, and the team reverted to hoofball tactics as soon as they went 1-0 down. Whether Ronnie tells them to do that I dont know but he needs to sort it out.

Barnsley Rating
Look like a very organised outfit and today nobody can complain with the result. They outplayed us, outfought us and got what they deserved.

Summary
If the players cant get themselves up for such a big game then I think they need to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror, and ask themselves how much they want it. With regards to the playoffs our fate is no longer in our hands and we cant do anything else now except get what we can from our remaining four games and hope results go our way.

  • really could have done with you drawing this game, but i suppose we`ve had about three weeks worth of fixtures go in our favour there had to be one slip by!

  • “whats going on at Oldham? in form one minute, but your last 3 games have been abysmal- looks like division 1 for another season “
