Oldham Athletic were not really in any position to keep Dale Stephens from leaving for Southampton for a loan spell the club have said.

Promotion-chasing Saints have sealed a loan deal for the 21-year-old midfielder, which runs until the end of the season.

Blackburn`s Jason Lowe has been brought to Boundary Park to replace him.

Paul Dickov explained that they had refused an approach from the Southern coast club to get Stephens, but the player let it be known that he wanted to move. It`s believed that the wage situation and influence from the player`s agent played a part in his decision.

Dickov told the Oldham Evening Chronicle: “When Southampton came in we turned down their offer and Dale told us he wanted to stay.

“But after speaking to his agent, he came back and expressed a wish to speak to them.”
