Today saw visitors Northampton Town lose by 2 goals to one, after an impressive show from the Latics, an early Reuben Hazell goal saw the home team take the lead and Dean Windass added to this goal to give the Latics a convincing three points, which moved them up to 5th in the table with 53 points.

With the manager going for a slightly different 4-3-3 formation, playing Smalley up front with top scorer Lee Hughes and Dean Windass. He also handed debuts to new loan signings Seb Hines and Jan Budtz.

After last weeks game with Leicester which ended in a draw with Oldham playing with only ten men in the second half, the lads came out full of confidence and it showed with a goal in the 8th minute, Reuben Hazell heading in a Kevin Maher free kick to give the Latics an early advantage. 15 minutes after the break they doubled their lead with Dean Windass captalizing with another headed goal, this was his 200th league goal, which is a fantastic record. This put Oldham in the driving seat as the opposition really had to try and make some sort of reply, but Oldham carried on creating chance after chance.

Shortly after Northampton hit back with an Akinfenwa goal, which was his 11th of the season, this put a bit of pressure on the home side, but they shook off this come back and took control of the game again. With Lee Hughes coming very close to making it three when he hit the post from a Smalley cross, 8 minutes from the end.

Oldham manager spoke the official site about todays game ‘we fully deserved to win the game and looked comfortable for long spells’, he went on to say ‘the early goal helped as it forced them to come out against us and I think we are a better team when the opposition have to do that’. He carried on to comment on the support given to the players ‘I thought the fans were very good as well, they got right behind the lads today and you could hear that in the stands’.

I felt that there was no doubt that the better team won today, with a good performance from the whole team. The new signings looked very promising so that will boost our hopes for promotion, especially with Leeds dropping points, which will make the game with them next month a hot one.
