Oldham Athletic went down 1-0 to league leaders Brighton at Boundary Park on Saturday which means Brighton’s promotion march continued while Latics were left rueing their bad luck.

The man that did the damage was substitute Ashley Barnes hit the only goal of a game in which the visitors were outplayed by an Oldham side who looked a lot better than their mid table position gives them credit for.

Early exchanges in the game saw Chris Brunt go close for the visitors, but they still could have been behind had it not been for goalkeeper Casper Ankergren making a fine save from a Dale Stephens effort from 25 yards.

Filipe Morais also went close but his drilled shot was just wide of the post and then a blatant handball by Brighton defender Marcos Painter was missed by the referee as the visitors came under pressure.

Ankergren was called upon again to stop another Morais effort from going in, but at the other end Glenn Murray was left cursing his luck after seeing his header hit the crossbar.

But it was a bit of blindness from the officials that gave Brighton the lead on 67 minutes in controversial fashion when Barnes was not pulled up for offside and was allowed to tuck the ball in at the far post, much to the annoyance of the Oldham team and fans.

Oldham pressed hard for an equaliser but Ankergren was not in any mood to be beaten and when he was deep in stoppage time, the luckless Kieran Lee shaved the woodwork.
