Manager Lee Johnson has said he feels the only thing missing from our game at the moment really is that ‘spark’ in front of goal.

With Oldham on a run of six games unbeaten at the moment, having scored six goals in return, Johnson has told the Official Site that in his mind if we can be sharper in front of the woodwork then Oldham would kick on to the next level now.

With a tough game against Scunthorpe United up next, the manager said ahead of the game.

‘We’ve defended very well in the last six games and all we need is that little sparkle in attack. We have been working on that in training but we must remain defensively astute. If we build from a position of strength then we can move forward.’

The gaffer goes on to say that he feels we are a lot more solid this year compared to last season and that’s good progress as far as he’s concerned, especially as the players are more focused and are making fewer individual mistakes, but having sorted out our defensive strength now he wants them to really kick on at the other end of the pitch and turn this unbeaten run into a winning streak.

‘We are looking to kick on. It also means we need to score more but that doesn’t mean just strikers, everyone has to get in that mindset.’

More specifically for Scunthorpe, the gaffer adds.

‘Scunthorpe have some good threats. We have to nullify their threats and show them ours. I think it’s a tough league game and there is a big gap between league one and league two. League one is really competitive this year but I think Scunthorpe will be alright, they have recruited well and have been unlucky with injuries.’

Johnson goes on to say his opposite number Russ Wilcox will think himself unfortunate with their injuries and results so far, but he knows he’s been in football long enough to know that if he can weather the storm things will improve for them.

With Adam Lockwood continuing to be an absentee through injury, Johnson also gave a brief update on him saying he was now back in running training, but he knows we have to be ‘tentative’ with his comeback and give him the time he needs.
