Manager Lee Johnson was delighted with our penalty victory over Barnsley last night and his message at full time was it’s another step forward for the club and it takes us a step closer to what will hopefully be a trip to Wembley this season.

A four two victory on penalties wasn’t looking the likely outcome after Dominic Poleon and Danny Philliskirk gave us a half time lead, but a very late goal from them took the match to the spotkick stage.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game the gaffer said.

‘We are through but win or lose, I was going to be happy because I thought we were tremendous against a good Barnsley side. I thought we moved the ball well and we had threats all over the park.’

Johnson goes on to say that all game long he felt Wilkinson and Poleon were threatening their defence and looked likely to make something happen and he credited the work rate of Philliskirk saying he ‘worked his socks off’ and more that deserved his goal for those efforts.

He added namechecks for Dayton ‘getting the pockets’ and causing trouble, Jones and the performance of Tidser who hadn’t played much. He also credited Dieng for looking like he’d never been away and one great delight – despite conceding the two goals – was that we limited them to only what he thought were three or four chances ‘of note’ but we had opportunities in the double figures to have won the game outright.

‘I’m disappointed to have drawn the game but this one was about getting through to the next round of the competition. We passed them off the pitch and I’m delighted with my teams performance.’

He ended the interview by saying that with Wilkinson missing the penalty it was like his world had ended come fulltime such was his disappointment, but Johnson had nothing but praise for his ‘tireless work’ throughout the game and the instructions he’s taken on board to make himself a better game, so he’s delighted with him and knows there is plenty more to come.
