Johnson Angry With Exit

Having seen us go out of both the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and then the FA Cup in the game against Doncaster Rovers, manager Lee Johnson was not a happy man at full time.

Speaking to the Official Site following the late one nil loss following a George Elokobi own goal in the 87th minute, Johnson explained that he did feel the players had done enough to win the game, so he was bitterly disappointed to have lost it at the death.

‘I’m very disappointed to be out of the cup. Obviously we wanted to have a good run and we saw it as an opportunity in front of our own fans to advance, but it just goes to show that when you think you’ve cracked it, if you like, it comes to bite you on the backside. Our players went out there and didn’t quite perform as they have been.’

Johnson admits that we were obviously missing two key players in Mike Jones and James Wilson, because they have been in excellent form over a period of time, but he knows the squad should be able to deal with a few players missing, but overall nobody was really at the levels he’s come to expect from them.

‘I thought we did compete but both sides cancelled each other out and we’ve got done by the smash and grab in the last two minutes. I don’t want to get greedy but I expect more from my players.’

The gaffer goes on to say that in his mind he feels a ‘punishment’ is needed following that exit and the manner of it as he says that he didn’t think there was enough verbal communication from the players and physically they weren’t at their best, so he’ll decide on the punishment during training to ensure he gets his point across to the group.

‘They will have to lick their wounds and get ready for Saturday because I don’t want to stand for that. Unless they see the error of their ways then we can’t get better. It’s about getting better and we have to get better. We have lost and are out of the cup but we are very much in with a shout of the play offs.’
