It’s being reported that Oldham Athletic are close to securing a sponsorship deal with Sports Direct that would see Boundary Park renamed.

The MEN is reporting that the club are ‘on the verge’ of signing the deal which will see our home ground renamed for five years by the sportswear company.

As part of the deal, the company will take over the running of the club shop, which will be moved to our new stand which remains under construction at the moment, and Oldham will benefit from a share of the profits.

It’s suggested that Sondico, a subsidiary of the company, would also manufacture our shirts, and that Sports Direct would be the main sponsor as well.

The MEN reports that the club declined to comment when asked, but they understand the deal is quite far down the line and we are nearing a conclusion, but that no official statement will be made until our existing sponsorship with JD Sports ends on May 31.

A further twist on the deal is the suggestion that given Sports Directs owner Mike Ashley also owns Newcastle United, that a friendly would be arranged for 2014-15 and form the start of a relationship between the two clubs whereby we may benefit from loaning talented youngsters in the U21 set up.

Sums have yet to be disclosed or even rumoured at, but it’s believed it will be the biggest commercial deal the club have signed and over the five years it could represent a return of somewhere in the region of seven figures.

Oldham are also reportedly close to a deal with a company who are set to run a gym in our new stand as well.
