I’m not sure if Lee Johnson has ever officially retired as a player but he’s not turned out competitively for us since taking over in March of last year.

With that in mind it was always highly unlikely that an offer to play international football for Gibraltar recently was going to be accepted, which it wasn’t when made to him….

The Oldham boss, in his Thursday morning press conference ahead of our weekend game last time out, revealed that he had been approached about turning out for them during their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

Johnson (through his Dad’s Mum) would qualify for Gibraltar, who have been seeking experienced players to help them with their qualifying campaign after a 7-0 thrashing by Poland last month got their first ever qualification campaign off to a disastrous start, but he doesn’t fancy ‘running after the world champions.’

Even less so as he would end up turning out for them when Oldham are playing, which would be a bit weird seeing a manager turning out at international level while the side he is manager of are in league action!

What he did express though was gratitude to be thought of in the way of a player again, and at international level, as well as some shock but this isn’t going to happen.

If Johnson is going to play for anyone going forward it’ll be Oldham, but the chances of that happening anytime soon seem about as likely as it is that I’ll be turning out for the Latics…. or Gibraltar for that matter!
