Lee Johnson might not want to be saying what he is too vocally of someone will come in and look to prise Carl Winchester away from us!

The Oldham boss has branded our midfielder ‘championship class at least’ following the start that he has made to the season, turning his ‘bit part’ nature from last season into a regular starter in the side this time round.

Already Winchester is closing in on the appearances that he made in the whole of last season, when he managed just 13.

Having worked hard in pre-season the 21-year-old if reaping the benefit for this according to his boss, who thinks his pre-season ahead of the 2013/14 season had a lot to do with his lack of chances last season.

Physically bulking up has really helped, the boss told the media: ‘He’s been superb. He’s got himself going and we’ve got him going as a club. We’ve looked after him because we’ve always believed in him.

‘I think his biggest problem last year was his pre-season; he never really got right all the way through the season physically but this summer we’ve had him on a regime to bulk him up and get his fitness right.

‘He’s had a really good pre-season and I think he’s been Championship-class at least since the start of the season.’

If Winchester can keep playing to such a standard, and those around him do the business too, then it is possible that his future could be at that level…. with us next season!

Such has been his form the midfielder has earned international recognition with Northern Ireland, whom he has linked up with for their game against Serbia tomorrow.
